Blind Date With a Book: The Ultimate Book Club Activity
🎁 Blind Date With a Book: The Ultimate Book Club Activity
Have you ever wished you could fall in love with a book without the pressure of judging its cover? That's exactly what a blind date with a book is all about. It's one of the most beloved activities bookstores do — and it translates perfectly to a book club. We all purchased one at the Novel Realm the last book club meeting (and will be reading our blind date books for this month!) So at our next meeting, everyone is asked to bring their own =)
Here's how to pull it off!
What You'll Need
- One book you're open to letting go of (I know this is the hardest part!)
- Wrapping paper or brown paper bags for wrapping
- Twine, ribbon, or washi tape
- Index cards or cardstock for clue tags
- Pens or markers
- Optional: stickers, stamps, dried flowers, or anything else to make them cute
Step 1: Choose Your Books
Pick a book you genuinely loved — or ones you've been dying to pass along. PS if you want to bring more than one please feel free!
Step 2: Write the Clue Tags
This is the most important (and most fun) part. Write 3–5 clues on an index card that hint at the story without giving away the title or author. Think vibes, not plot summaries.
Some ideas for clues:
- Genre or mood: "Dark and twisty. You will not sleep."
- Setting: "Set in 1920s Paris"
- Comp titles: "If you loved 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo'…"
- A single evocative line: "A story about secrets, sisters, and a summer that changes everything"
- A fun fact: "The author wrote this in 30 days"
Step 3: Wrap Them Up
Wrap the book snugly in paper and tie it with twine or ribbon. Attach the clue tag to the outside — this is what guests will use to "shop" for their date! Keep the look simple and consistent so no one can guess the size or shape of the book underneath.
Here's a video I found on how to wrap it nicely! https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Kpys-B6kokw
I can't wait to do this and I'm so excited to see how it works!
PS if you feel like it would be a financial burden on you to bring a book or do this at all, please skip this meeting or give me a shout, I will donate a book for you. <3
